I live in Southern California, which is known for having mild weather all year long. This summer, however, has been particularly hot, much hotter than any summer I recall in all my 30 years living here. This early evening, as I left work and got in my car ready for my commute, the outside temperature gauge read 109 degrees. All I could think about was wanting something refreshing to drink.
I spent many summers in various parts of Mexico growing up. One of my favorite memories is getting up early and walking to the open air markets with my Nana for Aguas Frescas. Aguas Frescas translates into “cool waters”, which are often made from fruit or veggies. In rural Mexico, they would often pour your drink into a plastic baggie, put a straw in it and wrap a rubbed band around the straw to seal it up. Ingenious.
